Our History
Founded in Bumpus Mills, Tenn., in 1906, the early history of Farmers & Merchants Bank gave little indication of the dynamic reputation it enjoys today. The 1930s saw over 10,000 U.S. banks close, but Farmers & Merchants survived in the small Stewart County community.
For the next 40 years, the bank stayed firmly rooted in this small community. Until in 1972, John R. Wallace became president and CEO. Wallace then began turning the small rural bank into a financial, civic, and community leader.
After moving into neighboring Dover, in 1988 the bank set sights on Clarksville as the most logical market for expansion. By 1989, Farmers & Merchants Bank opened for business in Montgomery County.
Growth was swift. The bank soon gained national recognition in Entrepreneur Magazine and The Wall Street Journal as a model of community banking. Expansion continued in Montgomery and into Robertson County as the bank opened offices in Clarksville, Springfield and Greenbrier. In 1997, the bank targeted Wilson County and opened its ninth office in Lebanon.

Becoming F&M Bank
In 1990, Sammy Stuard was named president and later assumed CEO duties, while Wallace maintained his role as chairman. Together they realized that to continue its aggressive growth, the bank needed a more modern, progressive identity. In 2003, the duo took the bold step to rebrand Farmers & Merchants as today’s F&M Bank. Consequently, this change successfully positioned F&M Bank for future growth and profitability as it has matured into one of Tennessee’s outstanding independently owned banks.
More expansion ensued with offices being established in Mt. Juliet (2006), Murfreesboro (2007), White House (2008), Hendersonville (2009), Cookeville (2009), a new headquarters facility in Clarksville (2007), Franklin (2019) and White Bluff (2019). The president, CEO and board chairman of F&M Bank is William S. “Sammy” Stuard. F&M Bank was purchased by Gaylon Lawrence, Jr in 2015.
F&M Bank has received local, state and national recognition for its community service and support. In 2020, F&M Bank was recognized by the ABA Foundation Community Commitment Award for its OPERATIONS: Partners Serve Program which provides a variety of critical resources and opportunities for members of the military community.
